It is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. The kids have been home since Saturday, the in-laws land at DIA tomorrow afternoon, and you are standing in the guest room wondering when the treadmill became a laundry rack. Hosting Thanksgiving in Highlands Ranch goes better when the house is handled weeks ahead, so the last two days are about food and people instead of baseboards.
CompanyClean is a locally owned house cleaning company based in Highlands Ranch, serving the south Denver metro. Here is the plan we would give a friend: what to book now, what to hand off, and what only you can do.
When should you start planning to host Thanksgiving?
Start four weeks out. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, and Douglas County schools are out the whole week of November 23, so the house is full and busy well before the meal. Four weeks gives you time to book help, sort the guest spaces, and leave the final 48 hours for cooking and family.
The reason to start early is not that there is more work. It is that the work collides. Kids home all week, a Wednesday travel day, and a Thursday meal mean every task you postpone lands on the same three days. The families who enjoy hosting are the ones whose house was ready on the Friday before.
What should you do four weeks out?
Four weeks out is for decisions and bookings. Nothing on this list involves a sponge.
- Lock the guest count and the sleeping plan. Who stays over, in which rooms, and for how many nights. This decides which rooms need real attention.
- Book the pre-holiday clean. Holiday weeks are the first to fill for most cleaning companies. Ask for a visit the week before Thanksgiving, not the week of, so any follow-up has room to happen.
- Walk the house with a guest's eyes. Front entry, powder room, guest bath, the room they sleep in. Write down what bothers you. That list becomes your handoff.
- Decide what is not happening this year. The garage, the closet under the stairs, the craft room. Close the door and let it go.
If you already have recurring service, this step is short. The house is maintained, so the pre-holiday visit is your normal visit with a few extra rooms called out.
What belongs on the two-weeks-out list?
Two weeks out, the week of November 9, is for the things that take time to arrive or to fix.
- Order anything you are short on. Extra chairs, a folding table, bedding for the air mattress, enough towels for every overnight guest to have their own set.
- Book anything mechanical. If the furnace has not been serviced since last winter, do it now. A south metro cold snap the week of Thanksgiving is common, and nobody wants to find out the furnace is struggling with a full house.
- Plan the entry for weather. Late November in Highlands Ranch can mean snow, mud, or both on the same day. Set up a boot tray, a spot for coats, and a mat inside the door. Fifteen guests walking straight to the kitchen in boots will undo any clean faster than anything else.
- Pick your menu and your thaw date. A frozen turkey thaws in the fridge at roughly one day per four to five pounds, according to USDA food safety guidance. A 20-pound bird needs to start thawing the weekend before.
What should be done the week before Thanksgiving?
The week of November 16 is when the house gets its reset. This is the visit to hand off, so you walk into school break with the work behind you.
A pre-holiday clean is not a normal tidy. It is the rooms guests will see and use, done properly: the guest bath, the powder room, the kitchen you are about to spend two days in, the dining room, and the bedroom someone is sleeping in. If it has been a while since the house had a full reset, many families start with a deep clean and keep it there with recurring visits after.
What you do that week is lighter:
- Clear the surfaces. Mail, school papers, the pile on the end of the counter. A technician cleans around clutter; you are the only one who knows where it goes.
- Clear the guest room. Move the treadmill laundry, empty two drawers, clear half the closet.
- Make the fridge space. Eat down the leftovers and toss what has expired, so Wednesday's groceries have somewhere to go.
What can wait until the last 48 hours?
Only the things that would be undone if you did them earlier. With the house already reset, the last two days are short.
Tuesday, November 24
- Make up the guest beds and set out towels.
- Set the table, or at least stack what goes on it.
- Run the dishwasher empty so it starts Thursday clear.
Wednesday, November 25
- Pick up from DIA, or send them the E-470 directions and a parking tip.
- Groceries, then prep anything that holds overnight.
- Ten-minute walkthrough of the entry, powder room, and guest bath: fresh hand towel, toilet paper stocked, trash empty.
Thursday morning
- Empty the kitchen trash and the dishwasher before cooking starts.
- Clear the counter you plate on.
- One hour before: candles, music, coats off the entry bench.
That is the whole list. If the house was handled the week before, Thursday morning is cooking and coffee, not cleaning.

What should you hand off, and what only you can do?
Hand off the work that takes hours and looks the same no matter who does it: bathrooms, kitchen surfaces, floors, dusting the rooms guests will sit in. Keep the work that needs your judgment: where things go, what the table looks like, which bed your mother-in-law gets.
The mistake we see most often is the reverse. Hosts spend Tuesday night scrubbing the guest shower, then run out of time for the things only they can do. The meal and the people are your job. The bathroom does not need to be.
If your guests are in town for the long weekend, our November events roundup has what is happening across the south metro. And if you hosted for Halloween, the Halloween hosting plan follows the same idea on a smaller scale.

Thanksgiving week with nothing hanging over you
Hosting is easier when the house is never far from ready. Recurring house cleaning keeps it there all year, so the holidays are about the people at your table, not the week before them.
